Leave the marshmallows behind: raise a toast to toasted twists.
Here’s the recipe:
2 ½ cups flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon raw sugar
½ teaspoon coarse sea salt
¼ cup bacon drippings (or butter, lard or oil)
½ cup milk and ½ cup water
Whisk flour, baking powder, sugar and sea salt in a med-large bowl. Add bacon drippings, butter, lard or oil (pick your poison). Stir in milk and just enough water to form dough. Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface; kneed gently till smooth. Roll dough to ¼ inch thickness with a floured pin; cut into 8 strips. Wrap each strip around a stick, starting at the top and twisting down. Travel into the deep, dark woods – or simply find a fireplace or stove. Rotate sticks over flame till bread is golden and sounds hollow when tapped (around 5 minutes). Mmm.
PS – To avoid igniting your hair like grandpa at the grill, choose a fresh green cooking stick. Wash the bark, or whittle it away. Now gather round. We’ve got ghost stories to tell.
